When Dark Spots Keep Coming Back

The first step is not always finding a stronger treatment.

Dark spots can feel frustrating because one mark fades while another appears.

But pigmentation is often a response to something else happening in the skin.

Acne, inflammation, irritation, injuries, hormonal changes and some medications can all contribute to hyperpigmentation. For deeper or darker skin tones, treating the cause of pigmentation is particularly important because inflammation and skin injury can contribute to additional dark marks.

So what should you think about first?

  • What caused the pigmentation?
  • Is the skin still being irritated?
  • Are breakouts being controlled?
  • Is sun protection part of the routine?
  • Are you introducing too many aggressive products at once?

In many cases, the strategy is not simply to “bleach the spot.” It is to stop the cycle that keeps creating it.

Sun protection is also an important part of managing hyperpigmentation, and the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes that tinted sunscreens containing iron oxide can provide additional protection against visible light, which can contribute to dark spots.

When the cause is under control, in-clinic options such as PicoWay or Frax Pro may be worth discussing with your clinician.
