Microneedling: What Is It Really Changing?

Tiny needles. A bigger question.

Microneedling is often presented online as a quick route to perfect skin. The real story is more interesting.

The procedure creates controlled microscopic injuries in the skin to trigger a healing response. It can be used for concerns such as acne scars, uneven skin tone and certain texture issues.

That does not mean one session will erase every concern. Results vary, and the skin may need time to heal and remodel.

Temporary redness, swelling, discomfort or a sunburn-like sensation can occur after treatment, and these effects generally settle over several days.

What matters most?

  • The treatment itself.
  • The indication.
  • The technique.
  • The depth and protocol used.

And, perhaps most importantly, who is performing it. Some devices add energy to the needles: Genius, for example, delivers radiofrequency and measures the tissue on every pulse.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes that complications such as infection, scarring or persistent discolouration are more likely when microneedling is performed without appropriate medical expertise.

Educational content. It does not replace a consultation with a qualified clinician.
